A “diva” beaver who was raised in captivity is at the centre of a court fight after it was mandated that she must be released into the wild.

A rescue center took in Nibi the beaver after she was orphaned. MassWildlife officials say she must be released — but her caregivers say she won’t survive.

Nibi has lived with Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, since she was rescued as a baby, but the organization filed an emergency injunction against the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) after the state office told rescuers to release Nibi into the wild.

Whether a 2-year-old beaver named Nibi gets to stay with the rescuers she has known since she was a baby or must be released into the wild as winter approaches in Massachusetts has ended up in court — and caused such an uproar that even the governor has weighed in.

Whether Nibi the beaver should be designated as an education animal or return to the wild will be decided by a judge.

Gov. Maura Healey issued a permit to the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue for Nibi, a 2-year-old beaver, allowing her to stay at the wildlife rehabilitation center and serve as an educational animal.
